Hi, i'm new here, My wife and I are thinking of selling fantasy related items at our local flea market, the problem is that i can not seem to find these items at a price low enough that we can sell them without giving our customers "sticker shock". We mainly want incense burners/smokers to sell but i cant find a "real" distributor for these items. Any help would be Great!

    Thanks

    Hi:
I used to sell these types of things when I first started in the Flea Market business. I can get you this stuff dirt cheap at a price point that will allow a nice profit without having to invest your life savings.

I will dig thru some of my old suppliers and get back to you in the next few days.

The poster is looking for Fantasy themed items, Mystical Moments doesn't carry any, just ordinary imports from India that every incense/aromatherapy vendor carries. There prices on Incense/oils is ridiculously high for wholesale as well.

http://www.scented.com is the best selection and price anywhere in the US.

    Charm2000,

Scented.com was very good. Prompt shipping and when we got our shipment it was the first time that we accually got everything we ordered without having anything broken during shipping. We have ordered from a few other places, but always got 1 or 2 items that had been broken or damaged due to sub par packaging.

As for finding other fantasy related sites, its been difficult, but we are new at this business. So far the best site i have found has been BL Gifts Wholesale , but they still don't have things that are priced all that great, some of them are though so check them out.

Have you found any other good sites? And are you actively selling now? If so it would be great to swap ideas, We've found this is not to easy of a business to get started in, but it is fun.

    Flawd,
I am too totally fresh to this business. I have no experience whatsoever about selling. I just got laid off from a high tech job and I wanted to start something new. Just like you I am starting small. I have to say it is not easy, but I am too having fun. Right now my main product lines are just incense, oil, diffuser and fragrance.

I have been searching for wholesale distributors at a reasonable price, so that I can make some bucks without giving the shoppers a " price shock". So far, I am in no luck of finding wholesale distributors.

rightnow, I am only doing business with scented.com, and still keeping my eyes for others. Perhaps, you can tell me about the other vendors you have dealt with. Do you know any wholesaler that carry candles/candle holder? I'll be happy to let you know as soon as I can find good distributors.

Thank you very much for a quick response.

Well, we are pretty new at this too. we have only had our booth up for a few weeks now, And its been slow going. Its going to take a while for the right people to realize we are there but all in all I think we are off to a good start.

Finding good wholesalers has become like the quest for the holy grail. There are so many sites that claim to be wholesale but after your mark up and tax and shipping the customers leave wide eyed and empty handed. We started off by going to buylink they have some good vendors, just search for things like dragons wizards fairies candles ect.

We bought about 450$ worth of merchandise from Pacific Trading through buylink. They have really unique items that are REALLY well made and create a great 'mood' but they are just not 'movers' (at least not here) due to the high prices after mark up. So i don't recommend spending what we did their unless you can afford it. I couldn't, but thems the breaks  But they do wonders for getting people to stay in our booth looking. The longer a person is in there the more committed they become in their mind to buy something from you.

So far the lessons we learned are:

    1. NEVER buy cases unless you KNOW it will move. (meaning you have had them in your booth and sold a bunch) otherwise your going to end up with a booth full of stuff you cant move.
    2. Never assume people have as good of taste as you do. Some of the stuff i would have bought in a minute sets there weekend after weekend collecting dust.
    3. Display, display, display.. most people (when it comes to burners /smokers ect) don't know what they are looking at. We have started using some of the coffin boxes and smokers as display and that helps draw people in and to know what they are looking at.
    4. Invest in one large item to display right up front to grab peoples attention. We bought a really cool mermaid table, stuck it up front and we get at least 3x the traffic.
    5. FILL YOUR BOOTH! if you cant afford it arrange things so it looks fuller or at least semi complete, pull out your extras, whatever it takes. Even if a person is into those sorts of items they might still pass you, they are at the flea market to browse. If you don't have much they are most likely going to walk right passed to see what the next guy has.
    6. If you really want to do this don't give up, the first week we made 6 dollars. Not even before cost! But this weekend we did MUCH better.

wow...that is great flawd!. It is always nice to get this kind of feedback from the people like you. I am certain that I could learn alot from your experience. Actually, it works out great for me since I am about to open my first ever flea market booth in a couple week. Up to date, I was only able to get my necessary gears and product items for set up.

Once again, thank you very much. I didn't expect to get this kind of response when I posted my message.

Being in the business myself, and having very close personal ties with http://www.scented.com (L&V Creations) I know how the aroma business has gone. Scented.com used to sell higher priced items and such but with such a huge amount of competition out there especially with so many people selling incense and such they had to sell lower to get the customers to keep coming.

Whenever a mall open theres always a bunch of people trying to get in there incense/oil business in there, some malls have 2-3 seperate vendors for the products. Local flea market here has 8 different vendors selling the same aromatherapy products. High price items just dont move as the next seller will have something cheaper.

The people at scented.com directly get stuff made from China and work with them personally. Most companies get on a phone and just pick stuff out of a catalog and then distribute that. L&V Creations spends lots of time in China working with the production itself. For example alot of companies that sell these products don't test them, as many of these burners are flawd designs! No proper ventillation leading to short burnings of incense for example.

If you have VIP access to L&V Creations they give you a preview of products they have coming soon. They got like 50 new items that will be awesome. A huge selection of dragons which are always popular sellers is on the way too.

I know what you mean. Luckily for us our local flea market has only one other guy selling the fantasy related items and he has nothing we do.

There are however a million booths selling candles, incense, oils, bath salts ect, But usually they only carry the wood holders. Nothing cool or different. And getting our stuff from scented we can charge half what everyone else does just for the wooden coffin boxes and still be doubling our money. And we can sell the nice resin boxes for about what the other people are selling plain wooden ones. Thanks for dropping their name We hope to grow big enough to become one of their preferred customers someday. :D

As for the dragons being popular..umm _yeah_ I would say so. Infact just this weekend a woman came in and commented she collects dragons and was reduced to finding things at the local gas stations

We opted to not carry incense since everyone else already does. We might get some Nag Champa but thats it. I wouldn't want to buy anything else on line scent unsmelled. We put our shipment from scented in the booth this weekend and it SAVED us. our booth went from the pricey things drowning anything else we might have sold otherwise to a very well put together place. With items ranging from 1$ to 180$ but mostly in the 8-15 range.

Like i said, we still have a long way to go before its as we want it, but the engine is finally cranked, and I'm looking forward to the trip ahead.

I am a newbie in this business. Can any body tell me what are some of the hotsellers as far as oil burner, perfume oil, incense sticks, fragrance oil..ect? It would be great if you can be a little specific about the type of oil lamps..

I just placed my first $400 order, and I am buying a little bit of everything I don't know if that is good idea...

    thanks

In the lamp department: Dragons are always popular. Buddhas also, and theres alot of interest in Egyptian style products.

But lamps need to be cheap now. The nice elaborate expensive lamps just don't sell anymore. So much competition now and to much saturation in the market makes the cheap lamps the hot sellers.

Incense/Fragrance Oils/Perfume Oils : Well in this department you can not dabble. A small selection of only what you think sells well will hurt you. Customers want a large selection and tastes vary so much. In a local flea market we had a small display with perfume oils from scented.com and people liked what they saw, but they always would want something we didn't have. We extended the displays to carry every scent and the sales have been very good in that department.

Its also much more impressive to have a large selection of products when it comes in various fragrances.

For burners for oil or incense... its hard to say as it really depends where you are and selling. In a flea market, do not consider selling anything high priced, stick to the cheap burners you can find. The higher priced and large burners? Those are better for example in carrying several pieces in a mall store for example. Just never go over board buying lots of high priced items as you will be stuck with alot. Just a few pieces here and there mixed with the cheap pieces is the way to go.

Charm2000, walk through your market and see what everyone else has, don't get anything you already see others selling, many who sell in our market who sell assorted giftware sell a limited selection of oil burners, but all the ones i saw here when i walked through before i ordered my shipment were the same old burners that every wholesale or wannabe wholesale site has to offer.

Also almost EVERYONE at my local market who has oil burners has a huge selection of pewter ones, I would say the vedors who have oil burners had around 80% pewter ones. So we decided to intentionally not get many pewter ones. variety is the spice of life, and if your stuff looks to similar to the stuff the guy had in the booth before you, odds are even if the customer sees something they like they will still pass you buy thinking the next guy will have the same item at a cheaper price.

Its good advise there. The people at scented.com run there own pushcarts as well selling there stuff retail, and its amazing that there own customers will set up shop in the same flea market as them... and there supposed to compete selling the same products how?

That is also true about my local market - I just visited the market and I have to say not many sellers carry the variety of lamps, they only have a few to show-nothing unique or special. but my question to you guys is which type of lamp is better than other in term of being hot seller. I've ordered some polyresin, glass, metal, pewter and a few ceremic; I have no clues about what will sell because I haven't started selling yet.

right now I have a dilemma and perhaps you guys can help me out. so far my only product line has been mainly lamps, fragrance oil, and incense stick and I want to be able to expand my booth to more than just these items for I know that I can't make it by selling just these items because i have to pay for space, tax, shipping and everything else. BTW, shipping is very expensive for me since I live in California and order my stuff from the EAST coast. :-(. Can any one suggest what other items I could carry in addtion to my existing stuffs and where I can get them at a fair price. I really appreciate your inputs. This is my first attemp in running a business and I am very anxious and excited about it. :D

You want to expand in the same sort of category your in? How about perfume oils? Smell exactly like original perfume but at a fraction of the cost. They are also great sellers if you promote them well! Remember, unlike normal perfume, perfume body oils are oil and the scent will last on your body all day! The oil is very strong. Normal perfume is saturated with lots of alcohol and the smell dissapears in a few hours, but oils will last all day and smell just as strong.

Push and promote them to those who stop and look. Have them try a little and remind them to keep smelling where you tested it on them as if they care about quality, they will see how strong the stuff is when after a couple hours of walking around the market or when they go home that the smell is still strong. They will come back for more.

Another possible expansion would be massage oils and possibly some erotic massage products like Kama Sutra. Problem with these is there not that cheap to get usually.

Wow Incensewholesale is a ripoff! $6.00 for Wildberry brand incense? Wildberry is nowhere near Scents of Creations quality and the price is 1/6th that. Hell I sell 100 stick incense bundles for half that and that is retail!

I find it hard to believe that scented.com is a wholesale site. First of all, all the prices I have seen are really close to retail and then thier discount schedule....

    From $250-$500 (7% discount)
    From $500-$1000 (10% discount)
    From $1000-$1500 (15% discount)
    From $1500-$2500 (20% discount)

I wonder how you folks think these are good wholesale prices.

CXM322 you think there prices are bad? You have no idea what you are talking about as your only looking at the cost yet you obviously don't know nothing about the products being sold and how much they actually retail for.

They are 100% legit, I know that for a fact, hell give them a phone call.

There prices are the best and the quality is not dollar store aromatherapy products. There oil and incense is also the highest quality available, not that alcohol filled !@#$ you find at a dollar store.

Find me a site with better prices on these products! Go ahead, I know all the major suppliers of these products and scented.com has them all beat.

I have a close relationship with the owners of the company and I am offended by those comments.

i live in a town in ohio that is a decent size has two colleges. i dont recall or know of any places that sell insense but the mall which is dieing stores go out of business there every year sometimes months. the prices at the mall are high and the stores arent that great there not even worth going to. our downtown area has quite a few buildings for rent for like $225.00 a month and its centrally located between the two colleges. the only bad thing is parking is not the best. im wanting to get into something business wise. when i was a kid i did flea markets and sold sports cards. i then did music stuff online. i am now out of all that and looking for better things. my mom is going to be making cakes, pies, buckeyes, candies, and all that and setting up a stand at the flea markets in my town and the town i was born in. where i live flea markets are very popular but they have seperate buldings for vendors and all different ages goto them. i was thinking start out with the flea markets and save up money but then open a shop downtown. i have around 1500 to start out to invest that does not include paying rent or anything like that.
im just wondering how well this kind of stuff sells??? i mean do you make enough money to keep investing and get bigger or is it more like make enough for table rent and maybe a few dollars more? please give me some info as i really want something to get into and this sounds good. also at our flea markets tables are only 20 bucks for the weekend for one table two tables are 30 bucks.

    please let me know

    thanks

    This is a great thread!
Yeah, everybody does incense. I'm going to carry it, myself. But, I'm going to have it primarily as "filler" for my table. Someone above pointed out that having a mix of eye-catching pricey items and dirt-cheap impulse items keeps people at the booth and buying. I am going to sell a product that is, I think, fairly original and should be popular. But, I need to get people to come in close enough to see the cool item I carry.

I really lucked out. I found a local wholesale place. It's like Dollar Days, only right here in town. So, I can just go and pick up what looks good to me for 50 cents a unit. Most of the stuff will sell for $1, some for a little more. Bright, shiny objects to draw the magpies in.

I'm also going to work something out with a couple of artists I know. I will carry their objects, high-quality stuff, and only ask for a small commision (maybe 20%). I don't really expect it to sell well, but they risk nothing in letting me put it on my table. I just need the filler and I don't mind if they make a little money - it's nothing that competes with what I want to sell. I do expect people to enjoy LOOKING at it, though, as it's nice stuff. That should help attract the magpies. I hope that works, rather than backfires.

I'm also going to use a pretty and colorful table cloth and try to make my display look as nice as possible with really neat signs and such.
