Is overstock, shelf pulls, customer returns, and discontinued items held in the same regard as wholesaling? I am contacting companies directly about getting their products wholesale and am running in to the whole "we require a business or tax ID". In which I am actually looking into getting one, but don't know much about that either. I am only beginning and am doing all the research I can before I do anything. Plus I don't have the funds yet anyway, but I feel research is good. eBay doesn't seem like a bad place to find the kinds of items I want to purchase and resell (high end cosmetics, bath & body products, etc), but I can't of course find all the products on there that I'd like to sell.

I saw a girl on eBay who is selling her "seller list" (I'm guessing she means her sources?). That then made me wonder -- I am guessing that there must be a person who gets product wholesale from a company who then sells bulk items to another person who then resells the items in lots on ebay at "wholesale" that then sell to me? Although I have the intention of relling as well. Most of the people on eBay only allow 5 (sometimes 10) items per order and they're random. I do wonder though if I was doing wholesale with a company directly, would I get random products or would I get my choice? Or, would it depend on the company?

Getting a Tax ID is simple, often done online with your state.

Be careful, some states REQUIRE that you file a tax return, even zero based.
Again, some states allow a simple phone call to notify them of zero $ transactions.

Many companies won't require a tax ID #, so if you can avoid it as it will save you less headaches come tax time.

Thanks for the information! Does anyone know if the sellers here at Whoelsale4um are the people who purchase wholesale from companies, or are they the ones who are like middlemen or whatever? I am consultant with a company who creates wholesale accounts with businesses and I know the discount given to them, which is quite large and I know they could then turn around and sell the product at a discount to someone else -- who then resells the product. So considering all of that some people claiming they're selling the product at wholesale, might not really be then, huh? It might certainly be discounted but possibly not "wholesale".

Most real dropship programs requier a Tax ID, resller application, credit check, etc. The middlemen sites or ones who pretend to be a dropship program often do not...because they are more of a retail business with the word wholesale in their URL. A wholesale program is not suppose to sell to the public (in general) so there should be some check that you are an actual business and can potential sell products with high volume which is the type of customer they want to deal with.
