I brought a bag of e bay what cost me £54 including p&p any way after wating ages and not receving it i reported them to ebay and there reply said that i should try and get a refund from pay pal so i filled in a claim form and after waiting a month i got a reply saying that i was intitaled to a refund of £37 because i payed more then this and i thought that i was coverd up to £500 if i used pay pal. So i phoned them up and thay turned around and said that because the person i brought the bag from only had that much in there account then that was all i was intitaled to and the seller will be banned from having a pay pal account again. So i said if i was to sell say £300 woth of stuff and people payed with pay pal and i took the money out then i would be up £300 and all that would happen was i would get my account blocked and thay just said that its policy and there was nothing more thay could do. So dont think that you are ever coverd with pay pal because your NOT!!!!

I guess no one is safe with paypal.
AuctionCheckout seems good.. I agree with those that mentioned it...
I still stand by Google checkout (despite a few flaws - only good for US customers - does not accept international)
Maybe helpful in preventing fraud?? I dont know.
Be well.

Yeah your right even Paypal isn't the best way, I would always prefer a credit card or an escrow service. Ok its 2% extra or so for an escrow service but you are save.

How is PayPal the bad guy?
They didn't pick the seller. The buyer did. Who has the money? The seller. So when people wire money to a fraudulent seller is Western Union the rip off agent? PayPal is only the method of transferring money. They are not a guardian angel with a pot of money to insure your money and buying decisions.
The internet is a nice place for people with bad intentions to hide. No website to check registrations, people hiding behind a P. O. box and a cell phone they can throw away, not to mention the people that use a fake name. Just because someone “sounds†nice when you email them doesn’t guarantee that they don’t have bad intentions.
It all comes down to do your research. -
I define Paypal as the badguy because they claim that there is protection up to a certain amount, which in this case exceeds the amount the buyer paid for product yet she was not infact protected and only recieved part of her money.
Paypal claims they will protect transactions...they found in the buyers favor yet still only gave her a piece of what she paid and in this case she is close to 20 British Pounds short of what she paid.
They may not be a guardian angel, but they certianly have "questionable" transaction methods.
They dont have the best reputation anymore and in this case, the buyer was the one that had damages -
He/She can not even buy a similar item that she originally did because she is out the money and will fall short by 20 British Pounds. Why should the buyer suffer when they think they are protected?
Its a false sense of security all around.
It would seem that protection exists only if the seller that "didnt ship" has that money in their account...otherwise
"tough"
Just my honest opinion.

What you say is true, Grace.
They don't guarantee "if the money is there", at least that's not how I read it.
And when you buy through a standard merchant account VISA or MC will make it good, regardless if whether the merchant is still in business, dead, whatever. THEY guarantee the sale.
PayPal, like Ebay is nothing but a bunch of clauses, excuses, and attorneys.
ArtBroker is right, you pay your money and you take your chances...... -
I agree.. Paypal is an excuse for a payment system.
As i always say "they are a giant 'excuse me'" meaning they are nothing but a company that offers a false
sense of security with their "buyer protection" - false advertising??? I dont know for sure...just seems that way...
very misleading to buyers... in conclusion- paypal does not make you as the buyer protected in any way shape or form.
(Pete- glad we finally agree on something
)
Be well.

well..... daz not so sad.....
my frd' aunt sold her LV at ebay for.. i guess near 900 or over 1k....
but the buyer didn't buy insurance.....
and the seller was a bit wonderful... she didn't buy a tracking number.....
(she rarely sell online)......
well, afterward, the buyer claims that she didn't receive the bag...
and paypal froze the seller's account....
she didn't get da money bak!!!...
she lost da bag and all the money in the account... wow....
paypal doesn't protect sellers at all!!!
(since most sellers provide insurance as an option,
and most of them are not responsible for any lost if no insuran)
well, for ur frd's case... it happened on this frd too...
she bought a so-called authentic brand name clothing...for 150..
when she got da product, she found out it's fake..
so she asked for a refund, paypal returned her $3x.....
therefore, my friend never buys online again...
paypal and sellers are not so trustworthy to her~~
ya.. it's sad~~ paypal charges a high transaction fee....(ebay too)...
sellers pay both~~ -
Here may be a solution to your problems
ihave launched a new auction site called Wee-Bids
the only cost u have is a yearly 5.95 registration fee
to pay for auctions u upload the money from your paypal account before u bid or buy
also there is an escrow option when u sell something that the buyer and seller can agree on that money stays in escrow till item is delivered and as completely described in the auction
go check it out and if you are interested in what i have come up with sign up
