There was a report on this on the news the other day, unfortunately my kids were driving me crazy and I didnt get to see the full report. From what I've been able to gather they are going to have a classified website called Google Base. It would be a free site for people to list things for sale. What do you guys think? If this is true, that would be a major blow to Ebay dont you think?
Couple that with the Google payment service that we heard about a few months ago, I think Ebay may have some serious competition there. I know we've had several debates about competition for Ebay. Many think Ebay has no competition, but that may not be so true. I just read in a Time Magazine Article that Ali Baba (Yes that chinese website that many of us go to for wholesale items has been giving Ebay fits with their Taobao.com) Ebay tried but has been unsuccessful in toppling Ali Baba in China. Yahoo has just invested in Ali Baba which will give them more capital to combat Ebay. Its gotten so bad that Ali Baba was banned from Ebay Live! They used to be there all the time since so many Ebayers turn to them for wholesale procucts but since they have become such major competition for Ebay in China that Ebay has banned them from coming to Ebay Live. I found that very funny. I dont know how long ago the article was written. I read the article in my Doctor's waiting room. If you guys can get a hold of the article its definately an interesting read.

I don't think it'll hurt eBay at all.

You're talking about different demographics and psychographics.
eBay already has Kijiji for non-english and 25% of craigslist for english speaking classifieds.
The national auction format has different people than the local classifieds types. Just like the different types that prefer Amazon while others prefer eBay while others yet prefer Half.com, etc.

Besides, the look and feel of Google's froogle sucks. Just like craigslist. Aesthetics is a big part that google lacks.

as far as the alibaba thing at eBay live...Alibaba was just trying to party crash and get all the eBay live attendees to come to their hotel room party. They weren't banned. Besides, eBay partnered with global sources so they have that wholesale connection instead of alibaba. And if Taobao is so good, then why did they remove all fees? They won't be profitable doing that. eBay eachnet survives in China with the fees. Better format fraud protection. Taobao's business model is lacking.

So many that want eBay to topple yet it just doesn't. It is amusing to read this stuff.
