well, it's the same kind of thing, but I was kind of hoping to find something different than the Overture list. I'm trying to reduce my dependency on the Overture lists.
After I asked this question last night, I made a list of keywords good for the word 'wholesale' and I used a very different method than Overture. I liked it much better, I think it looks more like the commercial searches I make.
thanks for the help,

Still not understanding what you are looking for.
Have you used WordTracker? Personally I prefer WordTracker to Overture because it differentiates between singular/plural as well as order of keywords in keyword phrases.
Wordtracker
wholesale 3,968.0 /day
von dutch wholesale 3,045.0 /day
wholesale glass pipes 2,613.0 /day
wholesale jewelry 951.0 /day
wholesale furniture 763.0 /day
wholesale flowers 740.0 /day
wholesale electronics 674.0 /day
wholesale fabric 665.0 /day
wholesale clothing 636.0 /day
wholesale beads 601.0 /day
wholesale handbags 584.0 /day
wholesale distributors 556.0 /day
wholesale products 526.0 /day

I tend to do lots of searching on W411 home page when odd things come up on Wanted MarketPlace. But you were requesting apparel, so if you take away the obvious Brand names.
I looked through the For Sale Ads in Apparel
cargo pants
dress shirt
fleece hoodies
Is this what you are looking for?

Well, it's kind of a halfbaked idea. In the days before WordTracker or Overture, people used to make their own keyword lists, they would make them so they could create those pages with 2000 words in the meta tags. It's a little more rounded, organic looking list than overture's which I can use in SECRET ways (bwaa ha ha ha) to build better content than I could with Overture's kw list.
Apparel seems like a real weird keyword range that I bet someone could easily get a beter list for than Overture's. I was just wondering if there's anyone out there maybe buying PPC advertising but finding keywords in addition to the ones that come from the recommended tools. ArtBroker, a larger version of your list is really the sort of thing I'm talking about.

OK - I think I get what you're looking for now.
When considering what to use as keywords I generally start with an obvious related word (like apparel) & then use a thesaurus to come up with more words that mean pretty much the same.
Then I go to WordTracker and Overture to get an indication of which are used more often in searches and to find keyword phrases that are popular search terms.

Hi Joe,
Glad I wasn't halfbaked! I didn't want to type 2,000 words and then find I was offtrack (off Topic). Coming from a family of writers, I would teach my kids when writing a paper to do the simple sentence structure, then grab the Thesaurus and go nuts.
Since apparel is NOT my thing, I just went to their arena and copied phrases. -
Those are both good methods of getting keywords. With 411, I have to be really broad-minded about possible keywords, because I want the site available for pretty much every searcher looking for wholesale "anything" and I want every person looking for all the merchandise keywords with some indication that they want to resell it or purchase in quantity. The problem with that is that 411 really doesn't want to send a lot of traffic to wholesalers that isn't looking to buy wholesale, which overoptimizing for apparel or shoes will cause. Although, in the future I hope that http://www.retail411.com reduces this concern.
My theory is that if I take a look at the a really expanded range of keywords for "wholesale" and all the "wholesale stuff" keywords, I may find some clear winners to optimize for. But, like i said this is possibly half-baked.

Hi Joe,
I went to our For Sale Marketplace first. My list seemed limited, so I went to apparel net for more ideas. Then I jammed them all together so I didn't clutter the thread.
I realize this is a busy time for our sellers, but I am surprised they are not interested in the key words for their industry. Maybe they are just watching.
It was a nice exercise. Just like drawing an ad, you layout your grabber words, then fill in the blanks. Doesn't matter what the product.
Any more ideas, throw them out.
~Art -
Well, these folks always seem pretty practical to me, and it pretty much is just an "exercise."
The thing that it points out to me though is useful for when you have your site built.. The keywords you want to use should really mirror what your industry really talks about and not what paid search tells you to. You should definitely use paid search keywords when you do paid search of course. That's the big advantage of paid search because those keywords are usually dependable channels of targeted traffic. But, optimizing a page for natural search engine results shouldn't use the same keywords.

Confused again - what are 'paid search keywords' and 'paid search' ?joepreston wrote:But, optimizing a page for natural search engine results shouldn't use the same keywords.
Why? I would think that popular search keywords would be popular search keywords regardless of the type of search engine. Maybe I'm just more confused than I think I am
-
Paid search is like Wholesale 411 or Overture, you bid on keywords and so do other people. Those are the most popular keywords and the best sources of steady dependable traffic. They are also the most competitive. If you search on the same terms that are the most popular all the time they will be very competitive.
There are lots of other terms out there that do get searches but aren't quite so competitive. People are going to search for at least some of the same things that they talk about in forums, pose as questions in the emails they send you, put on their own webpages, etc. Any one of those lists could be valuable and would look very different to what comes out of Wordtracker. Put the minimum bid on 100 of those keywords with 411 and you won't spend very much money in addition to your dependable traffic but you will fish out some customers that your competition won't find. -
The most popular keywords/keyword phrases searched for on Overture ( a pay for placement search engine) and the most popular keywords/keyword phrases searched for on Google (a natural/organic search engine) are the same. People don't search for different keywords depending on what kind of a search engine they are using. Searches may be more specific on a site like Wholesale411 but the order of popularity would be the same as on any other search engine.
You are right though in suggesting that if you are bidding on keywords you might be better off going with less popular, therefore lower cost keywords.
You could probably get first position in the search results for 3 less popular keyword phrases for the same price as you would have to pay to be in 3rd position for the most popular one.

Joe,
I know only enough information to be dangerous. With that said...
When I do a search for someone in the Wanted MarketPlace here on the forum, they are asking for vanilla kind of products. Since I don't know their marketplace, I use the simplest of terms to find some results.
So my thinking is the companies with the biggest advertising budgets that want that dominant place in the search are going for the expensive words that will guarantee the top spots. But the new buyers that are just starting may not be familiar with the jargon of the market and use the simplest of terms.
For example, if I spent the big bucks for Illuminated Manuscript, when in fact, the searcher may type "Bible page" because they don't know what they are called in the art field.
So from a marketing standpoint it would serve you better to think how the new inexperienced "searcher" would type in the search engine, rather than people in the field that know the business.
Am I close? -
Searches may be more specific on a site like Wholesale411 but the order of popularity would be the same as on any other search engine.
That's actually not true, which surprised me at first because I thought that Wholesale411 searches would model Overture in terms of search popularity for the range of wholesale products. But, there are big differences. I think what would account for those differences is the fact that Overture's listings show up on one set of sites and those sites work to optimize toward the best paying terms. And so to a certain extent the most popular terms have a relationship with the most profitable
Here's the top5 terms containing 'wholesale' according to the overture tool
176677 italian charm wholesale
175225 wholesale
83310 wholesale jewelry
48801 wholesale product
37712 wholesale clothing
29137 wholesale handbag
I wish I had explicit permission to make 411 data public, but take my word for it, our results look quite different from that (in terms of position)and it goes on down the line, not just the top 5. Wholesale411 gets enough searches that it should look like Overture if people search the same way across all engines but they don't look the same. Are there reasons why Wholesale 411 might be a special case? Maybe, but since I don't have enough data to prove that, all I can say is that the Overture keyword tool is just a start but not the end of keyword development for natural search or paid search.

Art,
That is so true especially in this little part of the Internet. If Sally Searcher is getting fed up with her job and looking to start her own online business she just isn't going to know much about the nuts and bolts of buying and reselling. A lot of common industry terms aren't going to be known to her, even 'wholesale.' but also 'distributors' 'dropshippers' etc. etc. However, she might be looking to "good products to sell on ebay" or any of a 1000 other possibilities.
Here's a good tool for finding terms that Google considers related ot each other.
http://www.gorank.com/seotools/ontology/index.php
It's really the same thinking that gets people to advertise on misspelt versions of a keyword (a very good idea - put misspellings along with correctly spelled versions in your keywords). When you have words that are related to your keyword, you should try to work them into your metatag description or keywords or your body text -
joepreston wrote: I think what would account for those differences is the fact that Overture's listings show up on one set of sites and those sites work to optimize toward the best paying terms. And so to a certain extent the most popular terms have a relationship with the most profitable
Eeeek - you're not suggesting that Yahoo,Altavista,MSN and Aol (the search engines that Overtures figures are pulled from) are skewing the numbers in favour of Overtures paying customers - are you?
joepreston wrote: all I can say is that the Overture keyword tool is just a start but not the end of keyword development for natural search or paid search.
No argument there - Overture does not differentiate between singular and plurals ("wholesale handbag" and "wholesale handbags" are both the same to Overture) or word order ("handbags wholesale" and "wholesale handbags").
I actually prefer WordTracker and it's not perfect either.
Both Overture and WordTracker have obviously incorrect info regularly.
e.g. In your example of Overture results for "wholesale" - 176677 monthly for "italian charm wholesale " is an error - WordTracker says 15 /day.
The WordTracker results for "wholesale" puts "von dutch wholesale" in second position with 3,045.0 /day - I doubt it. Overture gives "von dutch wholesale" 39.9 /day
I can understand that Wholesale411's 'popular search keywords' would differ from general search engines 'popular search keywords' due to the fact that the user base is a lot more specific on Wholesale411 but I wouldn't have expected a big difference.
