Anyone try Google Adwords? To use... or not to use... that is the question! Anyone get sales from this technique?

I use Google AdWords quite a bit. I like it.

Worship at the altar of "cost per conversion", and you'll do just fine. Get lazy and don't monitor your performance, and you'll end up in the poorhouse.

Google adwords is great. You are paying ONLY when people CLICK your ad. And you are obviously only posting ads with keywords relating to your product. Just be very clear about your product and the price.

I gave up on Google adwords. I was pricing my products slightly below eBay prices for those buying on my website for retail purposes. Even so, the conversion rate was not high enough to cover the advertising costs on Google.

The problem I had is that they have these estimated click throughs when placing an ad that way over estimated the traffic, sometimes by a factor of 10 or more (that is quite a difference).

About 3/4 of my ads were running at level strong (the highest) with the remaining at moderate. Based on this, I should have met or exceeded goggles click through, but they were not showing my ads enough to get even close to the estimates.

In order to run my ads on all of Googles partner sites like Shopping.com, I had to place my ads at 10 to 11 cents each, not 5 cents. But my profit margin did not justify the low conversion rates.

On the plus side, Google gives instant exposure. I've used them in the past for another business, so my account was already in their records as a good account meaning I could instantly start as many different ads as I wanted without approval from Google, so as soon as I started, hits were coming in.

I do like Google in the fact that once they code your company as legit in the system, you are free to change, alter, add, or subtract ads on the fly. Overture on the other hand has been a very different story where each ad must be approved by them and changes can take up to 2 days, a real drag in my opinion.

If you can get a high enough conversion rate, then Google is probably the way to go. If you can't get a high enough conversion rate, well, seek other outlets.

THere is a secret to Google AdWords and getting maximum exposure for the least amount of money. In fact, if you do it right, you can get #1 positions eventually by paying less than everyone else is willing to pay per click. But in order to acheive this, you must completely understand the Adwords system.

Also remember one thing, you can do everything right with your campaign and never get one sale. It depends on what you're selling who you are targeting. Then it depends on your website (prices, layout, ease of understanding, etc.)

If you are getting alot of visitors but no order (or not enough) you need to really look at everything, but one at a time. You need to tweak your site by figuring out why you are not making sales and adjusting your site/campaign accordingly. ANd also remember that your ad means alot. Use the wrong word in your ad and you could find everyone clicking but no buyers because you may be misleading them without knowing it.

BUt always remember that just because you think you have the right keywords, always guess again. For example, I was selling harmonicas at one point. I soon found that the term "beginner harmonica" was just a waste of time and money. You see, folks using the term "beginner harmonica" are looking for lessons and such, not to buy a harmonica. They would however, click on my ad just to see what I had to offer, but I never made a sale to them because ultimately, they were not looking to buy. Not the term "beginner harmonicaS" on the other hand, that is a different story.

ALso, remember that Google Adwords are not good for all products. I have had some products advertisied on Adwords that never sold. But then I advertised them on Overture and BAAMM, I got sales.

Adwords works better for me. Overture on the other hand is not as good.

PPC is an excellent way of generating sales if you know what you are doing. Choose the wrong keywords and you will pay for it. It is a good idea if you can work out your metrics so you know the maximum amount you can spend in order to make a profit.

Here is a simple example I use to work out how much to pay per click...

Lets say you get 5 sales per 100 clicks = 5%

$10 per sale or $50 per 100 clicks

    then if you multiply $50 X 1% = 50c

This will tell you that you should NOT pay more than 50c per click!

You can download a free Google adwords e-book on my website which may give you some good pointers to PPC.

    Hope this helps...
