Internet wholesale suppliers vs. local suppliers

Hey guys! I'm new to this wholesale thing and I know that nobody is going to give up their sources (I wouldn't either!!), so I won't even ask. My question is this: To the successful business people out there, do you rely mainly on internet suppliers or do you have local suppliers? It just seems to me that the internet suppliers don't have good deals, and when they do I'm afraid to give them the money because I don't want to get ripped off. Also, for those of you who have local suppliers, how did you find them? The phone book doesn't seem to be doing me much good. Thanks for all your help!!

    Hi Misty,

I'm pretty sure the old hands will tell you to go local. personally I don't think it makes much difference.

If you feel a certain amount of trepidation going into a deal online, request an Escrow service is used or ensure you use your credit card so you can charge back if it all goes sour.

Try your business papers (yellow pages in UK) for local sources or even buy a trade magazine!

Good Luck, I wish you all the success in the world :)

It all depends on your market. Local suppliers are usually good if you have a market where you can have a huge markup. Internet suppliers are a little better for those wishing to invest in surplus.

I agree. From my experience(which is limited I admit), I have found that internet source prices tend to run a little lower than local suppliers. Then again, you will find many internet sources can be unreliable and distributors of fake products. With local suppliers, you can obviously have more peace of mind since you can actually visit them and validate their authenticity. I think most people who sell via ebay and through online stores use internet sources. As you probably know, ebay buyers are very picky when it comes to buying clothing, and they are bidding lower and lower - especially with products like Ralph Lauren where everyone and their daddy is selling them. This is forcing many people to dig the web for cheaper and cheaper suppliers for these types of products. Anyway, you can have a successful business using only internet sources, only local sources, or both. It all depends on how hard you apply yourself to the task.

If there is not a lot difference between the local and the internet supplier. Local supplier is way to go! you can always claim exchange, return, etc to local supplier whereas you won't even see the internet supplier before or after the sale.

You must be vey careful and cautios when ordering from internet suppliers.

You have to be careful, either way you go. There are many resellers of junk on the internet. Heck this forum is full of advertisments for them.

I also know that there is a difference with local suppliers. You have to find the master supplier, because there are a lot of little wholesaler wantabees that buy from him and mark it up.

Oh and when you look for drop shippers, beware there are tons of them selling the same tired old junk.
