    Hi people,

I have recently sent money for an order to a guy in Korea and am now a bit worried about the whole deal. I checked the guy out on these forums and had 2 replies from peole who had dealt with this guy and said he was an honest supplier with quick delivery etc.
I also checked him out through paypal and he has a verified Korean business account.
Several emails were sent back and forth finalising the deal and things looked ok but after I sent him the cash I do not get replies which worries me somewhat.
I cleared my paypal account of funds so as to make sure I paid him from my CC, so what I am basically asking is if this goes sour would I be able to do a chargeback and get my money back??

I am new to all this so any feedback would be very welcome :-)

Kool, but what if he closes his account at the other end, how does it work then.
I asume my bank chases up paypal for the money who then in turn chase up the guy at the other end??

If the person has already withdrawn the money from his PayPal account into his bank account, even if you do a chargeback with PayPal they do not guarantee you will get your money back because that would make PayPal negative. You were smart to use your credit card. You can always initiate a chargeback with your credit card company.

This is what happened to me a couple of years ago. I made a large purchase and never received the goods. I did a chargeback with PayPal and they advised me that they were unable to recover the funds as the seller has already transferred the money to his checking account. They did not refund my money. I was upset so I contacted my credit card company and did a chargeback. A week later I received my money back and PayPal had a negative balance because there was no money in the sellers account to pay me back. To make the story short, I did receive my money back and never received the goods from the seller. I did not receive my money back from PayPal, but through my credit card company.

Thanx for the replies people. One question which may make me sound wonderful. I used my Visa card which is basically a debit card, I asume this counts the same as a CC??

One more thing, how long would you recommend waiting before initiating a chargeback, or would you do it as soon as it becomes obvious you have been ripped off?

    regards

As far as I know, you can use your debit card for a chargeback just like a regular credit card.

How long has it been since you placed your order? If it has been 3 weeks or more, you should start the chargeback. I would wait about 3 weeks.

    Hi there,

Its a real shame there's all too much of this around on the internet. I recently privately paid for a Nokia 7610 through PayPal, now around 2 weeks later the phone has not arrived, I've tried to contact the seller but they haven't got back to me for about 5 days, so I've decided if I dont get a reply by Monday I will complain to PayPal, hopefully they will get my money back if not I will do what others have suggested and initiate charge back, hopefully this can be done after a few weeks.

I just dont get why there are so many people out there willing to rip others off, it's the age old debate I suppose but it just shouldn't occur at all. Something needs to be done but that would be a whole different discussion..

    Back on topic then.. 8)

Much as I hate to do it...........I agree with store!

You should be able to get your money back from your debit card.

The seller has 30 days to produce the goods. If they fail initiate the charge back. Also warn them, then refuse delivery if it turns up.

You have 60 days to initiate the charge back with most credit cards (may or may not be the same with debit cards)

It's a real pain in the *@$% when this happens but don't let it put you off, there are plenty of trustworthy folk out there.

I wouldn't worry too much personally ... if he's got good feed back and a verified account I'm sure he'll work with you to deal with blips that might cause delays and so forth. I like to think that most businesses are customer based ... without putting customers first your business will go down faster than you can say bankruptcy. As for fraud ... well it will always exist what can I say but to stop complaining and do your research. Nothing gets done cuz its not worth going after  . Sure you might feel wonderful and victimized after but life goes on. I'd personally just go through the measures to protect myself from fraud and let the cops catch bigger fish.

    ditto on store-detective's reply...
    same thing happened to me...
i had to go through my credit card company to get the refund as paypal would not do anything...

    but be forwarned..
paypal will freeze your account so you can not withdraw any funds you might have in there....
if by doing a chargeback through the credit card company results in paypal having a negative you can bet your bottom dollars your account will be frozen....until they retrieve the money from the seller..

in my case it was frozen for 3 weeks..
i wont even go into how pissed i was...

needless to say i have filed my claim with the paypal lawsuit as it was against business practices to freeze an account

You made a good point. I forgot to mention that. After I received my money back from my credit card company, PayPal also froze my account. My account is still frozen and it has been over 2 years. I guess they never recovered the money from the seller. So now I have to suffer. I don't really care anymore, as I have opened a new account.

Yep, Pay Pal wants to play payment processer, but doesnt want the risk.

There is an old saying, you cant have your cake and eat it to. Unfortunatly Pay Pal hasnt been hit with that yet. I will be surprised if the CC companies continue to let Pay Pal manipulate their customers.
