I came up with a different approach today on advertising my handcrafted jewelry. I sent two of my best pieces to Sharon Osborn. She mentions stuff people send her and where to get it. Hopefully she will mention it on her show... which wouldn't suprise me if she did. Can't beat a few million people hearing about it at once. Hope I get something out of it... sigh...

Well I for one will be keeping an eye out for you to see if she mentions it... It's just that I fall asleep watching *yawn* her show. LOL

Perhaps Kelly will wear one soon? Should be quite noticible if she does since her clothes are quite tiny these days.

    Good Luck!!!!!

This is a GREAT example of "Thinking outside the box".

I remember sending something to Johnny Carson years ago, and it was returned because he received so many death threats that they accepted nothing! Found that interesting.

But I give you credit for trying new things to market your product. The place to be would be Oprah's Favorite Things program.

Pendants4u, be careful what you wish for. All you need is for Sharon to give one of your products to Ozzy, wishing him good luck. Then, as Ozzy drives off on his ATV, screaming "SHAROOOONN!!...how the bloody hell do you stop this thing!!" as he goes off a cliff. People might think twice about buying your pendants.

Keep us posted on your gift to Sharon, and don't forget to send one to Oprah! You can try going direct to Gail, as it might get you more attention. Just a thought!

You have basically suggested product placment, with the hope that she mentions it as well as wears it.

I work for All Star Radio Networks, we have a product placement network in which we showcase 8-10 items every month, for about 10 minutes of exposure per item.

Although handcrafted jewelry isn't somthing that would particularly interest me, our reach is nearly two million listeners in 48 states. If you have a product that might interest us, I can be contacted at aaron@AllStarRadio.com

I hear that. Sounds like a drive-by, canned advertisment.

Besides. How can you compare the exposure you get with America's favorite freakshow to that you would get on any radio network, especially considering the product. The demo grahics of the target audience is most likely younger consumers, I would guess.

cxm322, it is not advertising, but live mentions. With an average of 10 minutes of exposure per station; sometimes much more depending upon the item.

    Examples:
    1. The book: “How to work for an Idiot.” Stations had field day with this title with listener call-ins; listeners offering their own “Idiot boss stories”.
    2. The board game: “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”. That gave our show hosts so many different directions in which to go before they eventually awarded a copy to a listener in a contest.

This month the board game “Phoney Baloney” is one of the items being featured, and sample questions are going to be read.

Last month we provided sample “Pro-Bush” and “Anti-Bush” playing cards. These became props for the show.

So I would have to say that this is definitely not ‘canned advertising’, but rather live mentions by the very people that listeners tune into hear for their morning entertainment. This is one starting point of a ‘word of mouth’ campaign, while at the same time, the winner treats the item won (in a contest) on the radio as a trophy. And if he/she can’t actually use the item, it usually finds it’s way to someone who can.

And it should be noted that these are not "Caller #14" give-aways. We produce and script contets. For example, whe had a "Who am I?" contest with Henry Winkler in the same month that we showcased his fifth book "I think I flunked last nights field trip." In this case the book and contest were not tied together, but the contest did lead to 'early mentions' of the book before it was awarded on another day.

No one is questioning the service you provide but rather the manner in which you chose to announce your service.

It is apparent to me and others that your post was a "canned" ad without much genuine regard for the actual details of the original post and subject at hand.

This paragraph pretty much illustrates this...

Although handcrafted jewelry isn't somthing that would particularly interest me, our reach is nearly two million listeners in 48 states. If you have a product that might interest us, I can be contacted at xxxxx@xxxxx.xxx

If handcrafted jewelry is not something you are interested in, then why did you bother to post to this thread. Let me answer...because your only goal was to advertise your business, not so much to offer anything useful to the thread. Your goal was to capture a new customer not to help with any issues or add a relevent post to the discussion. While your product is sort of relevent to the topic at hand, the post itself wasn't (it was an ad for your business/product/service). Sure, your ad could have been more canned than it was, but ait is canned, none-the-less.

Thank you for your time in reading my response. I hope that this time I was more clear. If not, please re-read it over and over until you get it.

Actually, since the entire topic post is called "How I might reach a few million people at once... READ!", it was quite appropriate that I do indeed mention that there is a way of reaching 'a few million', or in this case about two million.

Whereas 'handcrafted' jewelry is slightly problematic for a radio product placement, it does not mean that is her ONLY product. And if she does indeed have a product "that might interest us", I invited her to contact me.

Nevertheless, CXM32, you ask the question:
"If handcrafted jewelry is not something you are interested in, then why did you bother to post to this thread." Then you actually 'answer' (incorrectly) the very question you pose. Please don't do this, it is rather annoying; correct answers are much more fun to read

She "asks" as the post topic "How might I reach..." and I answer that "I can", but that it is unlikely (without more information) that we would be willing to. But as I often learn, companies have new products that you can only learn about from talking to them as new items often don't show up on the web page. And new items interest me more anyway as our show hosts like to show that they are on top of everything.

It is interesting how you chose to attack my 'relevant' post, while completely ignoring some 'drug comment' posts that were way off topic.

Furthermore, my goal was not a to 'capture a new customer' but rather to educate. This topic posting was about educating, as Pendants4U "came up with a different approach today on advertising my handcrafted jewelry". I pointed out that this was 'product placement'. She was exploring a new approach for her, and this 'new approach' is something I do every day and is an area of expertise.

You say that my "product is sort of relevant to the topic." It is quite relevant to the topic and it is a 'service'. The topic is "product placement", that is what Pendants4U posted.

Pendants4U expresses the hope that she may "....get something out of it... sigh...". I make sure that the person gets something out of it. Pendants4U sent in an unsolicited request for "product placement", I qualify items for product placement, heck, I even LOOK for them.

I kept my post extremely short so as not to seem like I was lecturing. Maybe that is why you confused it with a 'canned' ad. Instead, immediately after that post I chose to post my own thread that talks about Product Placement, differences between TV and Radio, as well as several things to think about when considering product placement on the radio. I think you will find it an informative (albeit long) posting. And please don't start claiming that it is a 'canned' ad too. It is very appropriate post for a "marketing" forum. I have an area of expertise and I can give advice or help.

it's kind of funny that we're talking about sneaky/ingenius marketing ideas, but totally bashing mr. "canned."

we're all here to gain. some of us just want to gain knowledge, others need a social life, but still others have a business that needs recognition.

all marketing is "canned" at some level. the less "canned" it feels, the smarter the marketer, but that doesn't guarantee their services are better.

hehehe. sorry, had to be the devil's advocate there.

    and don't forget: http://gangof4imports.com

This is an old thread. However, I have to point out that you have to understand that whensomeone comes by and drops a message like that on a forum like this, it is easy to take such a canned response with a company name as a drive by ad simply looking to gain clients without regard for the actual, specific topic and thread at hand.

When mentioning a one's company in a forum like this and a therad like this, the seller should always keep his URLs and contact info in the sig line and try NOT to sound canned. if he/she does, it sounds like a blatant drive-by ad, which is simply bad forum ettiquette, even in this forum. There are too many newbies here to let drive-by posts or ones tha tlook so go by without scrutiny.
