Keep in mind that commercial insurance is very location specific. If you are including such things as fire insurance, the distance from a fire station plays a part. So do such things as any neighboring businesses / industries. Being next door to a refinery will affect your rates. So will sharing a wall with a pizza parlor or dry cleaner.

So, don't consider what others are paying. There is no specific fee for a specific inventory amount. In fact, your products will have a big bearing on your rates. Selling cosmetics, or something else that could result in claims of physical harm or discomfort will have a higher rate than if you are selling bricks.

We have an agent who uses "The Hartford" for a good, hefty (for our purposes) policy that is catered towards our products and business type (new product introduction, invention). Our policy costs us about $2500.00 a year. But we also ship much of our stuff through a 3rd party fulfillment house who carries all of their own insurance.

I agree, find someone who understands your business (import / export and wholesale) if that is your focus.

Don't even think about buying commercial insurance on the web. Use your local (printed) Yellow Pages and look for commercial insurance brokers. Don't bother with the "retail" guys who sell home, auto and life insurance. Get someone who knows business insurance, not someone who will sell a policy to his brother-in-law as favor.
