While the concept of making money with no inventory has been exploited by many on the net, dropshipping has been around for a long time. It is a legitimate way for some to go to market. But, it is certainly not for every wholesaler or manufacturer.

It is really better for a large warehouse operation, which is good at expediting small orders efficiently. For them, it eliminates the need for a sales staff of any size. With a varied group of what are virtually commissioned sales reps, all over the country, the supplier can probably maintain a fairly steady stream of orders.

Or, in some cases, the wholesaler may use the dropship business to "backdoor" products into the marketplace that they are also supplying through traditional channels.

The idea of extending any terms is a new one. My experience has always been that payment at time of order was the norm. Of course, there is no harm in asking! Demanding is something else.

With the net, there is no one secret to such things as SEO, and there are many affinity groups that are easier sold from within than as individuals without. So, dropshipping for a number of different "order gatherers" can get a supplier into markets they never dreamed existed.

If I can put up a website or forum that appeals to firefighters, or fishermen, or frogmen and have a banner or link to a site that sells a product that they might never have discovered otherwise, why not? These are sales the supplier would never have gotten in any other manner.

Is it for everyone? Nothing is. Is it a legitimate way to market products? Sure is, it's been done for decades.

Did the offer you were made sound reasonable? Not to me. I think you responded properly. But, I'd say it was the situation, not dropshipping in general.

Drop shipping is like consignment. If someone has faith in the product, they are willing to buy/invest. Even if only a dozen.

In the old days, I paid my sales reps 30%. But these guys were out making sales calls. Knocking on doors, attending trade shows, and making cold calls. 15% was acceptable, but I believe performance should be rewarded. And I knew these guys had other lines and I wanted them to show mine. If they made money selling my product, I knew they were working.

The best part is he wants the use of your money for 30 days.

Bill,

I'm a Manufacturer, Importer, Retailer and Wholesaler, I dont offer a Drop Shipping service and I'm not interested in being a component in someone elses online Drop Shipping business.

The contact I had was from an online Drop Shipper who wanted me to supply his customers with my products if he featured them on his website. He would recieve the order, pass it on to me and I would then supply, pack and ship the order and take all responsibilities for it. For the strenuous effort of sending an email, he would take 30% of the sale., but would only pay me once a month. Then there was the ludictous stipulations he put on being one of his suppliers.

Not for me.

Just asking what fellow Wholesalers think about the whole Drop Shipping scenario and if they take part in it, or not.
Just thought I'd get a general consensus on Drop Shipping.

I have just had an inquirey from a 'large' Drop Shipper who told me implicitly that 'I MUST carry at least 12 of each of my 300 products in stock at any given time', 'I WILL dispatch orders within 24 hours', 'I will be responsible for all shipping charges and returns' and this is the best part, ''********** will pass on MONTHLY, payment of products sold (at Retail price), less 30%'. I have refused to deal with Drop Shippers prior to this and this just re affirms my stance.

I wont tell what the context of my reply to them was, just suffice to say it was'nt pretty or in any way diplomatic!

Where do these people get off telling me how to run MY business?

I have a substantial vested outlay in stock to ensure my customers are looked after, I give the best possible service I can - to the degree in express air freighting in any 'out of stock' Imported items to keep my customers happy. And I may add, I carry very good pricing and offer excellent Specials every month!

I wont be dictated to by someone who has little or no vested interest in their business (other than maybe a Website). 30% for what? Getting an Email order and passing it on while I carry the stock, pack and ship and carry all the reponsibilities in the transaction? I dont think so.

I would like some other views on this subject.

Thanks
Jim Kirkwood
