What I've been finding is that the stuff available at the library is woefully out of date, and I haven't found anything published after about 2000 (even that is way out of date).

I am in the process of ordering samples from two companies, one in China, and the other is a larger importer. The place that I have found the most information is a site called Alibaba.

Hello howard,

check out my web site at http://www.landeddirect.com
I started a sub business because of the import success we have had at http://www.wilighting.com for many retailers such as Target, Pier One Imports, Shopko, WalMart, Borders Books, Jo Ann's, Michael's.....
I had a lot of 'smaller' customers asking the same question 'can you help me import'.. We have been very successful, though we have a small team, in helping. Check out http://www.1reason.com for example. You'll see we have what you need, or we can point you in the right direction. My good friend Bob has One Reason, between the two of us, we'll get you you going.

Best of luck..

Howard,

As a business, we help companies source products, logistics, and setup companies in China. My business partner is an American born Chinese American living in China. He has a PHD in engineering and knows the mfg and logistics side very well. We have helped companies such as Panasonic and many other companies source products from vendor selection to product design to manufacturing to logistics and customs. Having myself reside here in the States and my partner in China provides a very unique opportunity. If you really are interested in finding quality products in China - PM me and we will chat.

Thanks,

Justin

There are excellent fiddles being made in Asia in the $100-$300 range, and my wife and I have found that high-end merchandise takes less time for the same income.

The low-end instruments typically come with a blank bridge, which usually costs more to set up properly than the instrument is worth. I plan to sell instruments that are ready to play with minimal setup.

As I mentioned, I am a violinist, so I can personally evaluate the instruments. I plan to add an audio file to my auctions with the sound of me playing the actual instrument. It the cases that I have seen where this has been done, the sellers have had very good success with it.

Gee, just what eBay needs, another seller of $40 Chinese violins. There are a hundred of them out there any given day. I'm not sure what future those instruments have, my younger daughter is in strings class at the elementary school (she plays violin) and the teacher sends notices to the parents begging them not to buy "those horrible cheap violins on the internet." LOL

I bought her a new Knilling violin on eBay, a high quality one in a beautiful case. And I got it quite cheap. I was following violins on there awhile before I bought it and my observation was that unless the violin is really special, it goes cheap.

You can always run to your local library or bookstore and pick up an Importing for Dummies or another book of that nature. I do know they carry a wide selection of books about import/export and they contain everything you'll need to know to get started.

Importing isn't too difficult, especially if you have them send your product where they handle the responsibility of getting the product through customs. All you have to worry about is whether they are legitimate. Make sure to pay by way of L/C or secured payment. When dealing overseas, many companies/people end up being scammers.

Hope this helps.[/i]

I have seen a very successful eBay'er selling violins -- and I think I could do better, because he sells the instruments not even set up. I bought one as a test.

Not only can I set them up, but I can evaluate them because I play violin professionally. I have even found several companies in China, South Korea, and Twaiwan that will sell violins (by the 100's) at reasonable prices, and I am currently trying to set up a sample buy from a couple of them.

But I don't know anything about the import business. I don't even know what it is that I don't know, which is a scary feeling. I seek enlightenment. If you can recommend a source of information on this topic, please post it here.

Thanks in advance.
