The only true competitor for the new century against eBay is http://www.bidville.com : There are a several reasons why I believe this. First off and foremost is their customer service. Has anyone ever felt like a machine was responding to your questions when you contacted eBay cs? Of course! bidville's customer service is fantastic. There is a message board in which you can ask the moderators and customer service rep questions and they answer you fast! They are so nice too and understanding. I made a mistake when listing items and they took off 210.00 in fees when i politely asked them too without getting any kind of runaround. Would eBay do that? I think not. Most importantly, listing is free which means items will be cheaper than eBay. This will attract buyers as well as sellers as bidville continues to grow. There are currently over 3 million listings on bidville and it continues to rise. The flucuation is also improving with the market. Bidviles FSF fee is only 2.5% so thats all you pay once you sell an item (excluding enhancment fees of course). It is also much easier to list items on Bidville than eBay and that is a fact. With the express loader you can list very rapidly. The winning formula for Bidville which seperates it from other auction sites is this : Excellent customer service + Free listings + Cheaper items + User friendly website + a Great community = http://www.bidville.com
Tiffanys have already sued Overstock and is in the process of suing eBay. Their (eBay) answer is due this month. So we will see.

Like the other big auction place does not have Tiffany fakes and they don't get sued???
They have enough money to fend off lawsuits, but it is funny how they allow the fakes and no one sues them???
It all political cause Tiffs probably owns lots of the big E's stock!!

I agree with the above re: counterfeiting and drug trafficking.

It is always going to be around.

No market will ever successfully eliminate completely. Online or off.

We have to rely on the old reputation and feedback methodology to try and buy authentic goods in the off-price market.

<< think overstock.com should've gone with a verification process to distinguish there auction site, from everyone else's. With the verification process, it would do some sort of backround check (Work history, education, achievements, goal etc) for each seller. They have to register with the manufacturer of whatever they're selling and get clearance to sell those items (overstock would have to do this for the seller of course). >>

I cant imagine any auction company. not even Ebay doing this, too time consuming, plus they would probably have to hire more staff just to do these checks.
<<They have to register with the manufacturer of whatever they're selling and get clearance to sell those items >>

So what would happen to the people who wanted to sell their unwanted gifts? Or the people who buy at discount stores or outlets? How on earth would they get clearance to sell? I cant imagine any manufacturer or company willing to do this, What would be their benefit? Having Thousands of sellers and if OVerstock becomes a success hundreds of thousands of sellers trying to to cut thru red tape to get clearance.

I dont think there ever will be an auction site that wont be flooded with fakes. For all the VERO witch hunting that goes on on Ebay, they still havent stopped the sellers of bogus goods. I am pretty sure if the Big O becomes successful they will have their own type of Vero thing.

<<I don't believe that they know its fake. If they know its fake, why buy it? Why not just go to walmart and get the walmart brand? Why pay so much for a fake shirt, when you can go to walmart and get a better quality shirt for cheaper? I'm not saying no one goes on ebay and buys fakes goods on purpose, cause i'm sure they do.>>

I agree with Ms Pacman, A lot of people already know that they are getting fakes, not all but a lot of buyers do know. Unless you are from another planet, no way you think you are getting an $800 pocket book for $50.

Why buy it you ask when you can get a better quality shirt for cheaper?
Because we live in a materialistic world where status means a whole lot.
Guy dressed in fake Evisu/Seven or whatever will probably get more attention than the guy wearing the walmart jeans. Its sad, but its the world we live in, its the reason that people who can hardly make ends meet drive around in cars they really cant afford. I am sure some of us know some of these people or even related to them.

Not everyone can afford to buy the $200 pair of jeans, they dont want the
Walmart Jeans either so they go buy the fake one, Oh yes they know its fake but they really dont care.

You should come to New York City some time and go down to Canal Street in Chinatown. Its so crowded there every day you can hardly walk. People come from all over the US and other countries, they are companies who organize bus trips from other cities around the US to go to Canal Street so people can buy fake goods. The cops come every now and then but they havent been able to shut these guys down permanently. If you ask me, I dont think that they really want to shut them down, The city probably has to do it just for show. Canal Street is a NYC Tourist attraction just like Broadway. Some of the restaurant owners and other businesses tell me that they rely on the tourists that come to buy the fake goods to keep their business going.

The counterfeit industry is similar to the drug trafficking, You'll never be able to stamp it out.

Dont get me wrong, I am not advocating selling counterfeit goods. The point is that some people do want to buy fake goods. Its a status thing for them, regardless if its not the real deal.

Regarding the verification of sellers - why not do that? it'll take 2-3 hours to check the history. It'll take maybe 1-2 weeks to get the ok from the manufacturer. Remember, the point of this is to not have 100 sellers selling the same thing - and all of them having fake/cheap rip-offs like ebay.

Can you imagine how long it would take to get each new seller on board, though?

<< This way, it won't get flooded with fake goods. I think that would help buyers feel more relaxed when buying. >>

I don't think most buyers of fake goods care that they're fake. They probably know they're fake. I think what makes buyers feel secure is knowing that there's some sort of security blanket for their transaction, i.e., that when they pay their money they'll get their stuff.

There's already Fake Louis Vuitton bags on there....thats sad.

After watching the auction part of the site since the initial opening, I have to say that I doubt this auction site will get bigger than Yahoo's. I say that because it's the same stuff being flooded on ebay, and fleamarkets (example - $20 for a leather coat)- no offense flea market people =).

I'm gonna talk about their clothing section here because the clothing & jewelry section seem to be the categories that have the most auctions so...

I think overstock.com should've gone with a verification process to distinguish there auction site, from everyone else's. With the verification process, it would do some sort of backround check (Work history, education, achievements, goal etc) for each seller. This way, it won't get flooded with fake goods. I think that would help buyers feel more relaxed when buying. Because, as a buyer, why should I buy from overstock? I can get the same stuff on ebay, & yahoo for even less because of all the competition. As a buyer, I would think that there's a higher chance of me buying a fake polo for example from overstock because they don't have vero hovering over the auctions.
Do you keep your eBay IDs? I decided on a new one, but am not sure if it was a right thing to do, given that I am thinking to put a link to my eBay feedback from my Overstock's About Me page.

Overstock is also hooked up with Yahoo! shopping. For any of you out there that use Yahoo! as your portal (millions of us), there is an option to have Overstock.com offers on your home page. My wife and I have been looking at Overstock.com ads at least once a day for the last 5 years. That is pretty deep marketing of a single brand. We buy clothing, DVDs, households, and many other goods.

Overstock.com has a great business model. They are forging a path to profitability and growth in online retail. Their growth numbers are phenomenal, and they are looking to turn the profitability corner A LOT faster than Amazon ever did (or will do, depending on how you read their books).

They are doing something right. The market needs a David. I am sick of Goliath. If Overstock is the only one stepping up, I say lets hand them a stone.

Hi All,

I have been following this post and you guys have great discussion going. We also got the launch announcement on the auctions and jumped right in.

We have sold a few of our wireless desktops and routers so I think it is a hot market to trade in. Overstock has a ton of traffic going to it due to their agressive email marketing and the auctions will benefit greatly from it.

Those of you wondering, considering or just scared of getting started there, just take the plunge. The only thing you can loose is a couple dollars on listing fees, which by the way, are less expensive than eBay's.

Much success to all,
I`ve just started to use overstock.
I`m in England but i just state that my item will be shipped from the U.K
So far i love it, i seem to be getting less money than i would on ebay but the traffic visiting my auctions is fantastic compared to ebay.co.uk.
I have had loads of sales already.

Well I thought I'd let everyone know that I just got paid on my first Overstockl Auction.
I think its too early to guage what the success rate is going to be but I am sure glad to make a few extra bucks this week.

There are many problems that the big O is going to have to fix if they are going to make a serious run at the auction business. I hear that they are working with some of the auction management programs so that Ebayers who use them can also use them on Overstock. That will be a big plus.

Something that I have noticed however, is that the brands that I have bids on Overstockare brands that sells to an older crowd, Well let me explain further, my core market is the young urban hip hop crowd that buys urban wear apparel, these do very well for me on Ebay. So far I have no bids on these items on Overstock but the brands that I have bids on cater mostly to an over 30 audience.

I'd like to hear some opinions from anyone else who has auctions on overstock

They have a motif ad on MSN.com's front page. The usual advertiser in this spot is a mortgage company or a prescription drug. Did you ever see what PPC rates are for a lot of mortgage related keywords. I've seen 'em as high as $17.00 per click. So you know that motif ad on the homepage of MSN isn't gonna be cheap.

They are serious about advertising, that's for sure. I'm sure you'll see the TV ads soon.

You are exactly right. But it does no good to rebel against it (as a seller, that is). Just go with it. As long as your pricing is not ridiculously high and your site conveys trust, then you will make good sales.

=========================

That said, I am still holding the opinion that Overstock auctions may be yet another poorly planned venture with unrealistic goals.

-No bulk lister
-No SPAM filter
-No fee avoidance police
-Less than 2 months until the xmas shopping season officially begins

This all sounds like a bad deal anymore.

Yes I did post that. That is from a buyers perspective. I mainly buy on Ebay.

I have given it a little more thought though after reading the info that I posted about manufacturers concerns. I do think it hurts the image of the product and retailers in general.

<<< They also need to crack down on the rediculous shipping rates being charged. I saw one auction in which a person is chargin $379.00 shipping on 200 public domain movies. That is rediculous. This is what destroys the market for EBay.

If you read the last topic I posted it is very telling. Many wholesalers and manufacturers do not like Ebay mainly because of the deceptive tactics being used to sell there products. >>>

BKenn, aren't you the one who posted on another thread that "if the cost plus the shipping is still a great deal, what's the problem?" This was in reference for someone selling trinkets for $1.99 plus $69 shipping. Clearly the people who buy those DVDs think it's a great deal even with the shipping. Such sellers aren't ruining anything from anyone, no one has to bid on their auction. Of course, what you're calling "deceptive practices" I call "fee evasion." That's the real problem, IMO.

I would like to see someone take a peice of Ebays pie, I agree with the earlier post that the reason they are most successful is their customer service for the buyer.

In my opinion Ebay does not treat sellers very well. I have only sold a few items on EBay mainly because it is difficult to profit.

Ebay needs to crack down on the sellers who are selling bootleg dvd. I see people on here complaining all the time about Vero for clothing. I never see bootleg dvd sellers on here whining.
<< There are TONS of people who hate ebay but overall, eBay has a positive reputation with online auction lovers. >>>

I think that's because eBay's core promise -a genuine auction site- is kept. People hate their customer service or fees, which, IMO, are side issues that don't detract from the overall positiveness of the site. But you are correct, Overstocks.com to date has been successful. What does that say? IMO, just that most people don't shop smart. Because their core promise -low prices on quality stuff- really isn't true.

<< HOWVER, I must say that the act atht they say that they plan on advertising heavily for xmas yet they only have a beta version of a bulk lister that is hard to find is not a good start. >>>

What's also not a good start is the way their search engine can't filter out keyword spamming. I've tried to find several different things there and came up with the same worthless hits each time. Dropsellers of Chinese trinkets with dozens of keywords like Pamela Anderson in an auction of cheesy teacups.

mspacman wrote:<<< I have been a happy Overstock customer. I guess eveyone has theit own definition of whata good deal is. If its less than the retail prices in my neck of the woods then its a good deal to me. >>>

I bought a white rocker for my porch from them for $100. Later I saw the identical chair at Walmart for $60. Good deal?

That's because overstock.com is smart when it comes to consumer persption of their brand (and therefore their products). They call themsleves overstock.com and all they focus on is low prices. they might even have soem loss leaders just to make a first-time sale and get you to be a repeat buyer. But overall, it is a lie. They are not any cheaper than most other bigbox retailers. It's all in perception. tell them it's the cheapest and if you do it right, they won't even question it. they'l just buy it and fell good because they believe that they got the best possible deal.

I do this on one of my retal websites and it work better than anything else I have ever tried. My prices are about the highest you'll find on the net but I make the same sales as I did when I was offereing much lower prices.

Anyhow, this thread seems be turing more into a consumer bashing of overstock.com rather than a discussion on the future of their nerw auction site.

I think the chances are slim that they will make a dent in the online marketplace market but I also think that they have just as good a shot as any of the others that have tried.

HOWVER, I must say that the act atht they say that they plan on advertising heavily for xmas yet they only have a beta version of a bulk lister that is hard to find is not a good start.

We have less than 90 days until xmas and less than 60 days until the peak xmas shopping season officially starts. How on earth do they expect to get sellers to try it and to heaviliy populate the site and get comfortable with it in such a short period of time.

I am now beginning to wonder if they are just another failure waiting to happen. They seem to have not planned properly already for the xmas season and that could very probably indicate that their overall goals are probably out of whack as well.

They've got the brand, but it's possible that they don't have the brains.

Well, that may be true that you do not like them but the fact is that overstocks has a positive OVERALL reputaion with online buyers.

IOW. it does not matter what your perception is of them, it matters only what the majority of their other buyers think of them. Given their success with the straight selling part of the site, I would venture to guess that most people who did business with them do not have the same perception you have.
