Work from Home Sites Reply

Aside from the Better Business Bureau, are there any other ways to check if a "work from home" business is legitimate?

Sorry to see you've been taken in by the BBB!

They are just another business, selling their seal and approval to those willing to pay. There are horror stories in newspapers and on the net on a regular basis about dishonesty, bribes and more among various BBB groups.

Negative reports seem to "disappear" once a reported business decides to become a BBB member. This is virtually a given. Memebrs don't get bad reports, non-members do.

I was once approached by the local BBB in my area to join. The commissioned salesman kept at me to get onboard. The cost was pretty high, since it varied by the number of employees. At the time I was signing about 25 to 30 paychecks a week and the dues for a company with that many employees was just not possible for me.

I told the salesman this. I do support business groups, being a member of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the board of directors of the state trade association for my industry. But, I could not justify the price he was asking.

So, the salesman who represented this highly thought of (by the public, not by business people) group tells me to lie about the number of employees I have. He said pick a figure I wanted to pay and then fill out the form stating the number of employees that matched the dues figure I wanted to pay.

Sounds like a real reputable organization, huh?

Google the BBB and see some of the horror stories. There have been some real nasty one in some of the largest cities in the US. Their seal on a site or sticker on a door just means the business was willing to pay them off.
