About the Company
Fashion Scrubs by Miami Uniforms is a typical story of a Small Home Based Business at its best, which most entrepreneurs will relate to and appreciate
The Company was started in 1990 by Mike who at the time was a single parent raising two daughters, Jennifer & Jeanette Mike owned a takeout Pizzeria which he started in 1984, and also held a full time Job as a restaurant manager. The Company was started as an Import Company called Miami Towel and Linen, importing Aprons and Bar/Kitchen Towels. Mike knew the owners and managers of local restaurants and so he was peddling these items to them.
One day while delivering aprons and shirts to a restaurant kitchen, a cook asked him if he could get a white V-Neck Scrub as it was more comfortable. Mike, having no idea where to get them, started looking in the yellow pages, (This is before the internet), and found a local manufacturer of scrubs and met with the owner. They sold him the white scrub tops along with scrubs in colors and suggested to sell them to doctors and dentist offices.
On his very first visit to a dental office when Mike was showing the scrubs to the office staff, the dentist came out and said "are you selling scrubs here in my office". You all can guess what Mike thought at that defining moment, however here were the dentist next famous words, " I need 5 sets and let the staff have 2 each and I will pay for them, thanks, got to get back to my patients". WOW, what happened here??
Mike started selling to Hospitals, nursing homes, doctor's offices, cafeterias, to a point where the supplier could not keep up with the orders and uttered the famous words "BACK ORDERS". The local manufacturer finally said "welcome to the Scrub Industry, get use to backorders". Mike could not accept this and said "Why don't you just make more, I must deliver these orders or I will lose the customers", He replied "If you want them any sooner make them yourself' Mike said "I will, if that's what it takes" and so the manufacturer said "Sure, everybody thinks they are a manufacturer, go ahead, I will even let you use my patterns".
That was 1991 and the rest is history. In 1992 the Pizzeria was sold (3 days before HURRICANE ANDREW hit the area but that's another story.) Mikes two daughters were being trained in the family business all this time and were working part time at the pizzeria after school and also helping out with the Scrubs. The import Company's name was changed to Miami Uniforms and the Fashion Scrub label was started. The scrubs were being made at a Factory in Miami called ARMATH, Inc. whose owner Martha was extremely helpful and patient with designing and sewing of our garments, along with a young entrepreneur RAJ ( an experienced Tailor) they helped in creating the patterns and put together our line of Scrubs.
Mike opened a retail store with his daughters who had by now become partners in the company and they started to do a lot of Hospital Shows (some 2 day shows were generating $15,000 to $18,000), and proceeded to open another retail store, however the company started selling a lot more Wholesale and thus built up a large customer base. Around 1997-98, the Owner of the Manufacturing company that we originally used to purchase from, retired and so Mike bought most of that company's equipment, patterns, Etc. and combined it with ARMATH, Inc. in a partnership to open a nice size factory together and made all the garments here in Miami, but that soon changed due to high cost of US Labor. The Miami factory was closed in 2003, and with New Partners we went overseas to Mexico, China, Pakistan, D.R , Haiti Etc.
Today we operate a 16,000 sq ft wholesale distribution center from a warehouse owned by us, with a crew of 20+ employees. We also operate 3 retail stores in Miami. These retail stores give us the necessary knowledge and feedback to be able to understand our retail distributors and their needs. Fashion Scrubs by Miami Uniforms is presently working on expanding the business to the next level by offering new styles and designs in various different kinds of fabrics and are very proud of the huge selection of Prints which offer and specialize in, with the help of in house marketing and printing dept as well as various Artists on the payroll.
