I read an article this morning about a mom who started an online business renting toys out to parents (and of course their children). The idea falls along the same lines as Netflix where parents can rent 4 to 6 toys a month which come straight to their doorstep completely assembled and ready for play time. How brilliant! You’ve heard it from parents over and over about how many toys their children have and how shortly after they buy them, the novelty wears off and they are never picked up again. The accumulation of toys over time becomes a burden as well. With this rental system, the kids are happy, they can play with the latest and greatest without parents worrying if their money is well spent, and there’s no hassle of having to get rid of toys the children grow out of!

The idea is so simple, yet very effective. You’d think there’d be more like them but in fact, this is only the third type of business I’ve come across that uses this technique (first Netflix and of course their rival, Blockbuster, then BagBorroworSteal.com a designer purse rental site, and now Baby Plays, unless it’s just still too early for my brain to recall any more).

If you are trying to start a business you may want to brainstorm some ideas such as these. I believe there is a huge market for people wanting to rent things as opposed to buying them especially those in their 20s and 30s. Put your thinking cap on because if you can find the right product, this strategy just might be what you were looking for!

What if you could work at something you love, be creative, and get paid for it? This is exactly the lifestyle many people have been able to earn when starting their own candle business.

Think about it – probably everyone you know has candles in their home. From a way to sweeten the smell of a room, to an addition to a romantic setting or the accent lighting for a soaking bath after a stressful day, candles are a regular part of many households.

There are two ways to go about starting a candle business – make your own or sell pre-made candles. Either one can be profitable, if you know your market.

Making Your Own Candles

If the creative side of this business is what has your attention, you may not want to only sell candles, but also make them. Start small at first. See if this is a hobby you will enjoy.

Begin with a book on candle making, and purchase a small amount of the supplies you will need to make them from a local craft store. If you really want to turn your hobby into a business, you are going to have to buy candle supplies at wholesale prices to make the profit you need. This is just a test to see if you enjoy the candle-making process.

If you do enjoy the process, you will then need to search for candle supply wholesalers. These are readily available on the internet (click here to start finding wholesale suppliers of candle supplies ).

Keep in mind that when you first start, it’s tempting to buy everything. Instead, shop with a list and think before you buy to make sure you don’t end up with a house full of materials that you don’t need. That’s a lot of money that could be used in other areas of your candle business.

Another important thing to think about before making and selling your own candles is the amount of time that you’ll need to put into the business. Making your own candles is time consuming. Time is money – money you have to be able to recoup in sales in order to really run a profitable business.

Selling Pre-made Candles

If you decide that making candles isn’t your forte, but you still appreciate them and would like to try selling them, there are plenty of companies out there who offer wholesale discounts to those who want to begin a candle-selling business (click here to start finding wholesale suppliers of candles ).

Remember to keep and eye on what they will cost and what your pricing will need to be to make a decent profit. You want this to be a business that makes money.

Create at Marketing Plan

You should never go into a business venture blindly. You need to know how you are going to sell your candles. Many people rely on house parties, much like Tupperware parties, to make their sales. Some choose eBay, some flea markets and craft shows, while others opt to talk to boutiques and salons to have their items featured in these establishments.

Decide how you plan to sell your candles. If you are going to sell at house parties, start creating a contact list of people you think may be able to host parties. If you are going to sell on eBay or at a flea market or craft show, peruse those sites and see what similar items are selling for. If you want to sell your candles in salons or boutiques, you should set up appointments with the owners of those shops and see if they will be willing to add your merchandise.

Figure out how much each candle will cost and how much you need to sell it for to make a decent profit. Don’t forget to include any freight charges. Your final price will have to be competitive with other similar products.

Start Selling

Get your candles together, and into the line of sight of those who will buy them. While it may be a busy and scary undertaking at first, there is nothing like the feeling of reaping the rewards of running your own – profitable! – business.

If you’ve ever found yourself at festivals and malls, looking at the quirky t-shirt designs and thinking you could do a better job, owning a T-shirt business may be in your future.

Many people do well with their own T-shirt business, but the key is in knowing how to do it right, and making sure you’re ready before jumping into the fray.

As you think of taking on this venture, remember – there are a lot of t-shirt businesses out there, especially online. If you’ve looked at the array of online t-shirt businesses, there aren’t many shirt styles that don’t exist, especially with companies that will allow users to create their own design and have it printed.

With that said, you shouldn’t immediately rule out starting your own t-shirt business -just make sure you know what you’re getting into.

First, you need to create your business plan.

Getting Started

Begin with what you would like to achieve with your company. There are a number of ways to set your goals. You could have a personal goal of listing at least five new shirt designs a week and offering them on your site, or it could be reaching a certain number of visitors and generating inquiries. When setting goals, they should be both realistic and achievable.

Part of this will depend on your target audience. Who are you trying to sell shirts to? Do you want to sell in bulk? If so, you should be gearing towards companies or conventions. If you are going to create shirts for the public, what market are you aiming for? Sure, you can start a t-shirt company with a number of shirts in different styles, but it’s harder to get on the radar that way.

If you have a niche market that you are gearing your business towards, you will have a better chance of being noticed by that crowd.

When it comes to delivering the product, there are two ways to go about this – make the shirts personally or hire a third-party shirt maker.

Making the Shirts Yourself

Making the decision to create all the merchandise in your t-shirt business gives you more overall control in terms of creativity and the quality of the items that are being sold – but you’ll also bear more of the cost.

In order to go this route, you will have a lot of start-up costs – you’ll need to pay for the press, shirts, screens and paints to create your designs. This is well and good if you’re experienced with using t-shirt making equipment; but if you aren’t, then a good deal of time, effort, and most importantly money will go into learning.

Using a Third-Party Shirt Maker

If you don’t want to lay out all of the initial cash for the supplies to make the shirts, you can always bring in a third-party shirt maker. In this case, you’ll be able to send an art design to the maker and they will create the shirts for you. Many third-party shirt makers will require a minimum order for good pricing, or charge more and cut your profit on individual printings.

Finally, create a marketing plan to get the attention of your potential customers. Go to festivals, street parties, or chamber of commerce events and hand out information about your company. Go where your target audience is – if you’re marketing to college students, post flyers on campuses. Grassroots marketing works very well for t-shirt businesses. If you have a website, you may want to consider some form of online advertising – paid search, banners on popular blogs, or even social media marketing. The more inquiries and responses to your pitches that you receive, the more potential customers you will have.

You don’t need to look very far to see which ideas are most important to people in our society today. More attention than ever before is being paid to our physical appearance; our culture revolves around the idea of beauty, and it seems as though health goes hand in hand with that idea. Once you realize this, you will probably find that there is a lot of money to be made by starting up your own business in the health and beauty sector.

Of course, identifying a popular area and developing a product are only the first steps in creating a successful health and beauty business. In fact, some might say that those are the fun parts! In any business, there is going to be a need to pay attention to the small details, the mundane tasks upon which a business will thrive or fail.

Here is a look at some of the things you will need to keep in mind when it comes to growing your health and beauty business.

Determining a Business Model

One thing that you might not realize you have to put a lot of thought into is how your business is going to be run. It is likely that you just have an idea of what you want to sell and will go about pursuing that vision.

It’s important to think about your different options when it comes to your business model, because it means having a plan in place for all the aspects of your business that you may not have thought of just yet. Business models extend to your customer relations policy, all aspects of human resources, accounting, and division of labor.

The easiest business model to pursue is probably the franchise. Franchisees are given virtually all the materials they need in order to set up, and often there will be additional support when the business gets off the ground.

In exchange for this proven structure, though, franchisees will often pay a high price!

Determining What Products to Sell

With a franchise, this won’t be a problem; you will be told what to sell, and most of the time it will work for you. After all, the backing of the company (which is usually a well-recognized name) will mean an in-demand product.

On the other hand, even franchises may have options when it comes to what a business owner can offer to her or his clients. Different products sell in larger numbers in different areas (a very good moisturizing cream, for example, will probably do much better in the Southwest than in the Pacific Northwest).

This means that you will still want to suit your goods to the likely needs of your clients; concentrate on what is going to sell best in your particular market.

Laws and Regulations

Some businesses are fairly lucky, in that their products or services are not regulated by law beyond the usual stipulations required of business. Health and beauty, on the other hand, is subject to a plethora of different rules, as some of the products and services do have the potential to cause harm should they not work properly.

Rules governing the health and beauty industry for the most part are determined by the FDA, the body which tests products to ensure they are safe for human use. You will want to make sure the products you sell are approved. You will also need to check the guidelines set forth by the American Medical Association as far as health products and services; again, this organization is heavily involved in the regulation of health businesses.

Remember, a health and beauty business will be a lot of fun, but it is still a business. You have to be aware of the details if you expect to be successful!
