<p>With e-retailers expected to buy less holiday season merchandise this year because of the economic downturn, they need to sharpen their strategies in coordinating pricing promotions with available inventory, says Paula Rosenblum, managing director at research and advisory firm Retail Systems Research LLC.</p>
<p>“Plan a pricing strategy, plan your inventory strategy, and make sure the two are in synch,” Rosenblum says.</p>
<p>She adds that retailers this year, worried about overbuying merchandise in an off economic year, may experience unusually high levels of inventory out-of-stock. If that turns out to be the case, it will be even more important for retailers to take several steps to increase gross margins on merchandise sales to help compensate for the loss of revenue, Rosenblum says.</p>
<p>Retailers working with lean inventory levels should take a harder at free-shipping offers and how they’ll affect product sales, for instance, and work with merchandise suppliers to apply the steepest promotional price discounts to products that will be available in the highest volume.</p>
<p>“Work with merchandise vendors to figure out what your sacrificial lambs will be and how you can work together to maximize order fill rates,” Rosenblum advises retailers. She adds that arranging for some suppliers to ship heavily promoted products directly to customers could be a good option for maximizing both order fill rates and gross margins.</p>
<p>“We know there’s a lot retailers cannot plan, and we don’t know what the economy is going to really look like,” Rosenblum says. “But we can plan for all kinds of contingencies. A retailer winner will do that now to have a better holiday season.”</p>

The phrase has since become popularized to mean unconventional, think-outside-the-box marketing methods. The idea is to obtain the biggest results with the smallest amount of resources. Guerilla marketing campaigns focus on creating buzz around a product or service, to get people talking about it and to create a word-of-mouth frenzy.</p>
<p>One of the most recent examples of a guerilla marketing campaign that generated a huge amount of press was for the Cartoon Network&#8217;s new show &quot;Aqua Teen Hunger Force&quot;. In nine cities across the U.S., artists placed light boards showing a picture of one of the cartoon&#8217;s main characters. In Boston, the boards were mistaken for bombs and the city closed down bridges and sections of the Charles River. The incident was talked about on every major news channel for days as the media followed the story. By the time the story ended, most Americans, like it or not, had now heard about &quot;Aqua Teen Hunger Force&quot; &#8211; and the whole stunt cost just a few thousand dollars.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Starting your own guerilla marketing campaign</span></p>
<p>Most likely, your company&#8217;s guerilla marketing promotions will be done on a much smaller scale. Think about who you are trying to reach and what you can do to generate some word-of-mouth buzz. Remember, guerilla marketing isn&#8217;t traditional marketing &#8211; it&#8217;s over the top. For example, if you are a glass company and have come up with a break-proof glass for windows and doors, then why not put a big double-walled glass door or window outside your business and fill it with wads of cash. You can also use this same idea to advertise all over town. It&#8217;s shocking and it shows how confident you are that your product really works. There&#8217;s a good chance that an idea like this would get picked up by the local media.</p>
<p>The most important thing is that you think creatively. In order to generate buzz, your idea has to be buzz worthy. So, that means the idea is to get your campaign to invoke some sort of reaction in people. Another great guerilla marketing example comes from HBO&#8217;s show, <span style="font-style: italic;">The Sopranos</span> . To generate buzz during the show&#8217;s early years, the company had taxicabs all over New York and New Jersey hang fake arms out the back of their trunks. On the back of each taxi was a <span style="font-style: italic;">The Sopranos</span> bumper sticker.</p>
<p>It may take several weeks or months to come up with the perfect guerilla marketing campaign but, if done right, it could generate a huge amount of publicity for your business. If your campaign proves successful, then you can choose to do the same thing in other cities and states. You can keep your guerilla campaign running for as long as it&#8217;s working. Once the buzz dies down, then it&#8217;s time to go back to the drawing board and think of something new. Guerilla marketing works, it just takes some time to get the right idea. Good luck!</p>

Below are some ideas that will help you to promote your business, using free gifts and promotional items.<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;"><br />
Make it useful, but creative.</span> People enjoy receiving free items; however, they like to receive things that will be useful to them. Coffee mugs can be a cheap and useful giveaway item; but another coffee mug probably is not going to entice people to come back to your site, unless of course you sell coffee (or maybe kitchen items; but even then you can be more creative than that). So, give away something useful, but be creative at the same time, and keep it relevant to what your business does.</p>
<p>Having items that are not practical is another marketing scheme gone awry. Food gets eaten, balloons deflate and get thrown away &#8211; this is not very practical when you are trying to increase your name recognition with customers.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Make it appropriate to your audience.</span> For example, t-shirts don&#8217;t come in generic sizes, and you run the risk of sending someone a free t-shirt that&#8217;s either too big or too small. Hats, on the other hand, are pretty much one-size-fits-all.</p>
<p>Appropriateness also means that it relates in some way to your business. If you sell pet supplies, you&#8217;d probably give away something like a pet food dish, right? <p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Put your logo on it.</span> If you&#8217;re going to give something away, by all means make sure your logo is on it. This is considered brand marketing and recognition&#8230;consider it like a billboard for your company that your customers will either be wearing or using. However, if it&#8217;s hard to read on your items, then people will not recognize it as well. This will have the opposite effect of what you&#8217;re trying to achieve. Make sure if you&#8217;re putting your name on an item, it&#8217;s something that will get used by your target audience and that your business name is very prominent on the item.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Quality counts.</span> This is marketing material, so you want to invest some cash into getting your name out there, and increasing your brand recognition.
