Angel Investor Networks

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

If you’re starting your own business and seeking help with the start up costs, angel investors may be a good place for you to start. Specifically, angel investors are groups of investors who have formed a group, either formally or informally, to help individuals get a business off the ground. Each angel investor network works differently - some may charge a fee to present your business idea, or charge a fee just to be considered. Still others require that a member sponsor you or that all ideas are funneled through the group’s website. Whatever the requirements, ensure that you know what they are and follow them.

Below is a list of angel investors that we’ve compiled to help you get started. The list has national companies with web sites detailing their services to help in your search. Please keep in mind that every effort has been made to ensure that the information is up-to-date and accurate. However, it is imperative that you do your own due diligence, as the information provided is only a starting point and we cannot guarantee that any of the information has been changed or updated after the publishing of this article.

The angel investor networks can also be located regionally, and also many of the sites below have links to other angel organizations. Additionally, some angel investors only consider applications in their geographic area, although they are listed as a national angel investor group.

NATIONAL NETWORKS

Active Capital (formerly ACE-Net)

Active Capital was developed in 1995 by the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy. The SEC requires that people who are seeking funds from someone have no prior relationship, and that the business must register their offering with the SEC. The fee to have your company listed on the ACE-Net’s Active Capital database requires a $199 enrollment fee plus the U-7 Small Company Offering Registration (SCOR) form. The range of investment is from $250,000 to $5 million.

Investors’ Circle

Investors’ Circle is a national nonprofit network of angel investors, foundation officers and entrepreneurs. Requirements for consideration by the Investors’ Circle members include at least one of the following areas such as community development, education, environment and energy, health, and women or minority-led business. The average investment is from $10,000 to $6.5 million.

The Tribe of Angels

In 1998, a group of prominent Jewish investors and entrepreneurs began investing in companies primarily in the United States and Israel. The group is a private, members-only group that is a web-based networking service. TOA selects entrepreneurs to present to investors. Those that may not qualify for a presentation may still be eligible to network with investors and other businesspeople in the group on the TOA network page. There are over 5,000 members worldwide with an average investment range of $50,000 to $1 million.

Gathering of Angels

Six companies are allowed to present a PowerPoint for 20 minutes to the investors with some time allowed for questions and answers. The cost to present is $2,500; but not only does this include the presentation, but there are three hours of coaching, mentoring and consulting from the Gathering of Angels, specifically for the presentation to be successful. There have been 17 companies in 2006 and 10 in 2007 that have been granted venture capital. Online presentations are also available to be conducted.
